Do you want straighter teeth, but without the eye-catching brackets and wires of traditional braces? The Invisalign clear orthodontic system was developed for patients that feel similarly to you! Thanks to the incredible technology, you can achieve a healthier and more beautiful smile in as little as six months simply by wearing clear, removable, and more comfortable plastic aligners. The Aventura Dentists would be happy to explain more about this option during a one-on-one complimentary consultation at our practice.

Invisalign vs. Traditional Braces

Braces and Invisalign are designed to straighten teeth, but they do so in different ways. Traditional braces consist of metal brackets, which are cemented to the teeth and threaded together with metal wires and rubber bands. The system puts pressure on the teeth to move them into optimal position and alignment. Invisalign uses a series of clear removable aligners to gradually shift teeth into the desired position over a period of time. This process is generally less painful when compared to traditional braces.

Many patients prefer Invisalign because the clear aligners are more discreet than traditional braces — they are virtually undetectable to other people. This is a great option for teenagers that tend to be self-conscious or adults in the workplace that don’t want to attract attention to their orthodontics. The aligners are crafted from a smooth plastic material that is much more comfortable in the mouth. The plastic won’t scratch the insides of the cheeks or tongue, or irritate the gums. Also, the aligners can be easily taken out and put back in by the patient for eating and cleaning. This is much more convenient than traditional braces, which are fixed in place.

Understanding the Invisalign Treatment Process

Invisalign is suitable for patients that have mild to moderate crowding or spacing problems. It is not recommended to fix more serious bite issues. Our dental team consults with each patient individually to determine whether Invisalign is the best option for his or her specific orthodontic needs.

If our dentists confirm that Invisalign is, indeed, appropriate, the entire process is carefully planned out from start to finish. The first step is for our Aventura dentists to take X-rays. We use the latest digital impression imaging to record the shape and position of your teeth without the need for the old messy and gaggy impression procedures. This way we are able to get the best fitting aligners for your mouth and for your comfort. We map out the current position and alignment of the teeth, and where they should be at the conclusion of treatment. This information is then sent to the laboratory, which constructs the Invisalign aligners accordingly.

Patients receive the first set of Invisalign aligners within a few weeks. They wear them for at least 22 hours per day, removing them to eat, brush and floss. Detailed instructions are provided for keeping the aligners clean and in good condition.

Several weeks later, patients receive the next set of aligners in the sequence. They should swap out the previous pair for the new pair. One of our dentists will see the patient every four to six weeks to monitor their treatment progress.

Most people wear 10 to 20 sets of aligners and complete treatment in about a year, although the total treatment time depends on the specific case and circumstances.

Faster, more comfortable treatment, in fewer visits.

Invisalign FAQs

How long does Invisalign take?

Depending on the status of your teeth, Invisalign can take up to 12 months. To find out exactly how long you will need to use Invisalign, it’s best to schedule a consultation with a dentist at Aventura Dentists.

How do I care for my aligners?

Since Invisalign is removable it’s easy to take care of your aligners. Simply remove them and rinse with warm water. You are also allowed to brush aligners with a soft-bristled toothbrush.

Can you chew gum while wearing your Invisalign braces?

Chewing gum while you are wearing your aligners is not a good idea. Gum can stick to the aligners which will be difficult to remove and clean.

How old do you have to be to have Invisalign?

The age of a patient for Invisalign is dependent on when their adult teeth are ready. It is best to schedule a consultation with your Aventura Dentist to figure out if you are a candidate for Invisalign.

How often do I need to wear my aligners?

It is typical and most effective if aligners are worn 20 to 22 hours per day. Aligners are to be removed during eating, brushing and flossing but returned after those activities.

How often will I need to see my dentist?

You will be set up with regular appointments with your Aventura Dentist. Typically you will be in every four to 10 weeks to ensure progression of your teeth and your aligners.

Can I smoke while wearing aligners?

We discourage smoking. Not only will it lead to discolored, dirty teeth and aligners, it’s also extremely unhealthy.
